Is Instagram cold DM automation safe? How to lower the risk

No tool makes Instagram cold DMs risk-free. How many to send a day, how to pace and follow up, what to do after a block, and exactly how DM Hero sends.

By Jakub Kowalski, Founder

The short answer

Instagram cold DM automation is never completely safe: no tool can make cold DMs on Instagram risk-free, and that includes DM Hero. You can lower the risk by sending a small number of messages a day at a human pace from your own account, only to people you picked, with a message written for each of them and a short follow-up sequence that stops the moment they reply.

We make DM Hero, an Instagram outreach tool, so we have a stake here. Below is sensible practice, then exactly how our extension sends and where it stops helping.

Why Instagram accounts get limited

We don't know Instagram's thresholds, and we don't believe anyone outside Meta does. Any "safe number" online, including our defaults below, is a starting point, not a rule. Assume the risk grows with anything that makes an account look like a spam source:

  • Volume and speed. Many messages in a short time, or a jump from almost nothing to dozens a day.
  • Sameness. One text sent word for word to a long list of strangers.
  • Reactions. Strangers can ignore, block or report you, and an irrelevant message invites that.
  • A new or quiet account. Little history, little evidence that a person runs it.

Instagram publishes no thresholds for any of these; they are what we design around.

How many cold DMs a day, and how fast

Start low and raise slowly. DM Hero's extension defaults to 30 messages a day per Chrome profile and can be set from 1 to 300; on a new account it suggests starting with 15 to 30. Raise it in small steps after a stretch without warnings, and lower it the moment Instagram pushes back.

Pace matters as much as the total: a batch fired off in a few minutes looks nothing like a person typing, so leave real gaps between messages.

Cold DMs from one account are a low-volume channel. If your plan needs hundreds of new conversations a day, Instagram DMs are the wrong channel for most of them.

Write for one person, from your own list

A message that could only have gone to this person is less likely to be reported and more likely to be answered. Mention something specific about their business, say in one sentence why you are writing, and ask one easy question. Leave links out of the first message; they make it read like an ad.

Build the list yourself from accounts that match your offer, short enough to write to each person properly. DM Hero does not find prospects for you: you import a CSV file or add leads one by one.

With templates, vary the wording. DM Hero templates take variables such as {{name}} and {{niche}} plus spintax for variations, and an AI writer drafts openers from your saved tone and what you know about the lead. It does not read the prospect's Instagram profile, so the specific detail comes from you, in the lead's fields and notes.

Follow up, then stop

A few follow-ups are normal; a sequence that never ends is not. Space them days apart and stop as soon as the person answers. A new DM Hero campaign starts with four steps spaced 0, 3, 5 and 7 days apart, each counted from the previous step, so the last goes out around day 15 at the earliest. A reply stops that lead's remaining steps, and leads marked not interested leave the queue.

Keep quiet hours

A stranger's message at 2 a.m. annoys the one person you want to impress. DM Hero's extension has quiet hours from 22:00 to 07:00 by default, by your computer's clock, not your prospect's, so adjust them for other time zones.

When Instagram flags an action

If Instagram blocks an action, tells you to slow down or asks you to log in again, treat it as a signal:

  1. Stop sending. Don't retry the same action over and over.
  2. Do what Instagram asks in the app.
  3. Don't resume the same day, and when you do, lower the daily limit.
  4. Check what went out before the warning: how many, what wording, to whom.

DM Hero's extension pauses at once when Instagram asks for a login or reports a blocked or rate-limited action, and after three failed sends in a row. It shows a desktop notification and reports the reason to the app.

How DM Hero sends cold DMs

Cold DMs and campaign follow-ups in DM Hero don't go through Meta's API. Our Chrome extension sends them from the Instagram account signed in to your browser: it opens a new message in Instagram's web interface, finds the recipient by @handle and types the text one character at a time, roughly 30 to 120 milliseconds apart. It sends only while Chrome is open on your computer.

Chrome extension, your own account

Cold DMs and follow-ups

  • Random 45 to 120 s between messages
  • 30 a day by default, 1 to 300
  • Quiet hours 22:00 to 7:00
  • Pauses when Instagram blocks an action, limits you or asks you to log in

Replies

  • The AI Setter's replies
  • Replies you write in the inbox
  • Inbox sync
  • DMs to people who comment on your posts
Two routes: the extension sends cold messages from your browser, replies go through Meta's API.
SettingDefaultYou can change
Delay between messagesRandom, 45 to 120 seconds15 to 600 seconds
Daily limit30 per Chrome profile1 to 300

Automatic pauseOn a block, rate limit or login request; after 3 failed sends in a rowThe error pause can be switched off
Campaign sequence4 steps, 0, 3, 5 and 7 days after the previous step (last around day 15 at the earliest)Up to 100 steps, 0 to 90 days after the previous step

Replies take another route. DM Hero connects your account, syncs the inbox and sends both the AI Setter's replies and the ones you write in the inbox through Meta's official Instagram API. The AI Setter is off by default and, when on, replies only within 24 hours of the prospect's last message.

What this does not protect you from

Delays, limits, quiet hours and pauses keep the pace close to what one person could do by hand, and pause sending when Instagram reports a blocked action, a rate limit or a login request. They don't change the fact that you are messaging people who didn't ask. We don't claim any approval from Meta for cold DMs, and your account can still be limited.

Also, the daily limit counts per Chrome profile: one Instagram account used in two profiles or on two computers gets two counts, and can send twice what you meant to.

When not to send cold DMs at all

  • Your Instagram account is your business, and losing it for a few days would cost more than outreach could bring in.
  • You can't say in one sentence why this person should care.
  • Your buyers don't use Instagram for business.
  • The rules on unsolicited commercial messages where you or your buyers are don't allow it. Check first.

DM Hero is the wrong tool, even when cold DMs make sense, if:

  • You want identical messages sent to thousands of strangers. DM Hero is for people who already know who they want to talk to.
  • Your leads already come to you through comments and messages, and you don't plan cold outreach. A tool built to answer incoming messages fits better.
  • You want to keep a personal or private account. DM Hero works with Business or Creator accounts, and professional accounts can't be private.
  • You need a tool that finds prospects for you, or sends while your computer is off.

If DM Hero does fit, the plans and the 7-day free trial (card required) are in the pricing section.

Frequently asked questions

Is Instagram cold DM automation safe?
Not completely. No tool makes cold DMs on Instagram risk-free. A low daily volume, a human pace, your own account, a list you chose, personal messages and follow-ups that stop on reply lower the risk without removing it.
How many cold DMs per day can I send on Instagram?
We don't know a number that is safe for every account. DM Hero's Chrome extension defaults to 30 messages a day per Chrome profile and can be set from 1 to 300. On a new account it suggests starting with 15 to 30 a day.
Does DM Hero send cold DMs through Meta's official Instagram API?
No. DM Hero's Chrome extension sends cold DMs and campaign follow-ups from your own logged-in account through Instagram's web interface. Meta's official Instagram API is used to connect the account, sync the inbox, send the AI Setter's replies and the ones you write in the inbox, and DM people who comment on your posts.
How many follow-ups should a cold DM sequence have?
A few, days apart, and none after a reply. A new DM Hero campaign has four steps spaced 0, 3, 5 and 7 days apart, each counted from the previous one, so the last goes out around day 15 at the earliest.
